Cocktail recipe

Canadian Spirit Old Fashioned

Author: William Johnston

Story behind this cocktail

I have always enjoyed an old fashioned. This past Christmas my brother in law gifted my wife and I a small bottle of a blueberry maple syrup made with blueberries from their area in Thunder Bay.

I thought I’d give it a try as a simple syrup substitute and I have to say it’s the cleanest, brightest tasting old fashioned I’ve ever made!

Ingredient(s)

  • 2 oz bourbon whisky
  • 0.5 oz blueberry maple syrup (or homemade blueberry simple syrup)
  • 3 dashes angostura bitters
  • Large ice cube or sphere
  • Orange peel garnish

Recipe

Grab a classic rocks glass and set it aside with a large cube or sphere of ice in it. Take a mixer tin (or a pint glass) and add the bourbon, syrup and a couple cubes of ice. Give it a stir and strain the glass into your rocks glass. Give it a few dashes of bitters. Peel a decent chunk of orange peel, express/squeeze it over the glass and wipe down the rim with it before tossing it into your drink.

Bonus points if you have a couple fresh blueberries for garnish too! Enjoy :)

Ben's recommendation: Mixes well with L'Imposteur Wheat's warm oak notes.
